What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of slow controlled strengthening and stretching exercises to create a healthy mind and body for a healthy life. This method was developed over a century ago by Joseph pilates and has been tried and tested by dancers in the States since the late nineteen twenties. In recent years it has been discovered by athletes, models and actors alike, who claim to owe their strong streamlined bodies to the pilates method.

WHY PILATES?

Pilates matwork is a fantastic way to improve posture, core strength/stability and enhance general well being. This slow controlled class will allow you to work the body as one whole unit, creating a well balanced body for everyday life.

POWERHOUSE

Your powerhouse is the band of muscle that circles the body about an inch below your belt line. In order to achieve good core stability we must have good activation of this band of muscle.

PELVIC FLOOR

These exercises are often forgotten in many general fitness programs, yet have many health benefits. Good activation of the pelvic floor muscles can greatly assist women in post natal recovery.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO CLASS?

Comfortable clothing that allows the body to move freely. Leggings and a T-shirt are ideal. Oversized clothing makes it difficult to see the spinal alignment. The exercises should be performed bare footed, but socks are recommended for your comfort.
